We all have our favourite apps, some for editing, some for posting, some for shooting on away from the native camera app. Below I will list my favourites and a brief look at each of them.
A go to for editing on your phone, its feature packed, free and excellent. It doesn't come loaded with many pre-sets but allows you to develop and save your own for future use. Most of my photos go through this package at some point either from start to finish with the edit or some fine tuning after visiting another package.
A superb app and worth the subscription for the extra features such as the very effective masking options. Its not cheap at £45 a year but in my opinion is worth the money, updates fairly frequent and it does pretty much everything you could want editing wise. If you are fond of pre-sets the subscription gives access to a huge number both from adobe and the wider lightroom community. Try it for free and then buy it.
I have a soft spot for VSCO even if I am a poor relation to the iphone crowd who have access to the pro features. It is a pre-set gold mine with a rich feature set of editing options. The android version is not as good editing wise as the previous two apps but will serve you well for most editing tasks on your phone. I find the UX a little annoying sometimes but that might just be me. The social side of VSCO is pretty important and this year they are pushing it quite heavily, allowing "discussions" or comments and for those darn iphone pro users, the ability to mark yourself as available for work. Pro users also get access to a desktop suite which is nice. Did I mention they won't allow android users to go pro?
If you hunker after old and new camera filters with an interesting twist this is the app for you. The app lets you choose to shoot with different cameras emulating their famous film looks with the added bonus of having the back of the chosen camera on the screen. Its novel and great to shoot with if you cannot be bothered to do any editing to achieve the film look. Its also comes with numerous video camera options for those filming on their phone. The app also allows you to import photos for applying the film presets.
This is a bit of an obscure one not heavily used and infrequently updated, the UX is not for the faint hearted but is power packed once you discover all the options. It allows you to change almost every parameter to the photo, the list is endless. You can create and save some very individual presets in this app. The tilt shift option is excellent. A must have for shooting on your phone.
As for social sharing I manly use X these days. Instagram chased the video users and buggered up the algorithm so your work just gets lost in an ocean of content. There is a new app in development called FOTO that looks like it has potential, if I get on the BETA I will update on its capabilities.
Basically with the above you can have a lot of fun shooting or editing with your phone. Get out there and do it and show the world the power of the camera in your pocket.
